Common scams

Phishing and fake apps

Is the wallet you downloaded the real one? 4 min

Phishing means imitating a trusted service to steal your access. In bitcoin, the target is always your keys.

Fake websites

A search ad or an email leads to a site with a perfect copy of a real wallet or exchange, and an address that differs by a single letter. You type your password or seed phrase there, and it goes straight to the attacker.

Fake apps

Fake wallet apps regularly appear in app stores, with copied names, logos and fake reviews. They work normally until you deposit, or they send your seed phrase to their creators.

How to protect yourself

  • Get wallet apps from the link on the official website.
  • Bookmark the sites you use and always go through the bookmark.
  • Never click on ads to reach a wallet or exchange.
  • Enable two factor authentication on exchanges, with an app rather than SMS.

What to remember

  • Phishing sites copy real ones down to the last detail.
  • Fake wallet apps exist in official stores.
  • Use bookmarks and official download links.
