WHAT A NODE ACTUALLY DOES

It downloads every block, all the way back to the first one in 2009, and checks every rule on every one of them.

Was this payment signed by the person who owns those coins? Does this block pay its miner the right amount? Does its fingerprint have enough zeros? If anything fails, the block is thrown out. It does not matter who sent it or how much electricity is behind it.

That is the job. Not mining, not trading. Checking.

WHAT CHANGES WHEN IT IS YOURS

Without your own node, your wallet asks somebody else's. How much do I have. Has my payment arrived. What is the latest block. It asks, it gets an answer, and it believes it.

Almost always the answer is true. The question is what happens the day it is not, and the answer to that is: you would never know.

With your own, nothing is asked. Your wallet reads the record sitting on your own disk. A wrong answer cannot reach you, because no answer is coming in.

There is a second thing, quieter and bigger. Whoever you ask can also see everything you ask. Every address you look up, every payment you watch, tied to whoever is asking. Your own node ends that too, and most people never think about it.

And a third. The rules only hold because machines refuse blocks that break them. Running one means your refusal counts. One machine among tens of thousands is a small vote, and it is not nothing: here, it is the only kind of vote there is.

WHAT IT ACTUALLY COSTS

There is no reward. No yield, no token, no payment of any kind, and that is deliberate: a paid job attracts people who want the pay.

What it takes is an ordinary computer left switched on, a few hundred gigabytes of disk and a normal connection. The first run downloads the whole history and checks every rule of it, which takes a day or two. After that it is a few gigabytes a month.

That number is the whole reason a block was kept small. If a block were huge, keeping the record would need serious hardware, and checking would end up in the hands of a few large operations. Checking would still happen. It just would not be yours.

An ordinary machine is still enough, seventeen years later. That was the design, and it is why nodes are counted in the tens of thousands and not in the tens.

WHY NOBODY CAN COUNT THEM

The number at the top of this page is a floor, not a total, and the difference matters.

You can only count a node if it answers when you knock. Plenty of nodes never listen for incoming connections. They sit behind a home router, or behind Tor, or are simply set up not to. They are doing the full job, they just cannot be seen from outside.

So every count you will ever read, this one included, is the number of nodes that happened to be reachable. The real number is higher. Nobody knows by how much, and anyone giving you a precise total is guessing.

What does a Bitcoin node do?

It keeps the whole record, back to 2009, and checks every rule of every block for itself. It rejects anything that breaks a rule, whoever sent it.

Why would you run your own Bitcoin node?

Because then nothing is asked. A wallet without one asks somebody else's node how much you have and whether your payment arrived, and believes the answer. With your own, the answer comes off your own disk, and whoever you used to ask stops seeing what you look up.

Do I need a node to use Bitcoin?

No. Most people use a wallet that asks somebody else's node, and it works. What your own changes is not whether you can pay, it is who you are asking.

What do you need to run a Bitcoin node?

A computer you can leave switched on, a few hundred gigabytes of free disk space, and an ordinary internet connection. No special hardware, which was a deliberate choice: if it took a data centre, checking would belong to whoever owns data centres.

Do you get paid for running a Bitcoin node?

No. There is no reward of any kind. Running one buys you the ability to check for yourself instead of trusting somebody else's answer.

Is running a node the same as mining?

No. Miners build new blocks and are paid for it. Nodes check blocks and are paid nothing. Miners run nodes too, but the vast majority of nodes do no mining at all.

How many Bitcoin nodes are there?

26,634 can be reached right now, and the true total is higher than that.

Can anyone count Bitcoin nodes exactly?

No. A node that does not listen for incoming connections is invisible from outside while doing exactly the same work. Every published figure is a floor, not a total.
